Dressing for success

- Have you heard it takes about seven seconds to make a first impression? That's no time at all. So before we even realize it, someone decides in their mind what kind of person they think we are based on the physical image they have just seen. Having said that, it is critical that we present ourselves in a way that will leave the most favorable feeling with the person we have just encountered. One of the quickest ways to do that is by dressing for success. Here are some dos when dressing for success. Do dress for the role we want, not the role we have. I have always kept that in mind when determining how I should present myself each day. Although you don't want to look out of place, you also want to be mindful to dress for the level of the office you represent or the position you desire. I take many of my cues from the person that I support. I find myself in sync with how they present themselves. Dressing for success affects not only your physical appearance but your mental state as well. I have found that when I am comfortable in how I look and what I am wearing, I have a mental boost as well. My self-esteem increases, and I find myself in a better mood with more energy and more confidence. On the flip side, when I don't feel as comfortable in my appearance, it will have the opposite effect. Be mindful that you are not only representing yourself but also the office of your executive. Depending on how your office is set up, you might be the first person that people see, and you will make that first impression. Make sure it's a positive one for your executive. Putting the right amount of attention to detail when it comes to my appearance has helped me gain a competitive advantage and positioned me for greater levels of responsibility and leadership. I have been called upon to represent my boss in a variety of situations. She is certain that when I represent her in meetings, on committees, or whatever the case may be, I will show up on time, prepared, and dressed appropriately. All of these things work hand in hand to ensure my personal brand stays in a favorable light. Dressing for success is another instrument in your career tool belt. It is one area that you can have an immediate impact on and can benefit you for years to come.
