Determining a specific purpose statement

- Once you select your topic and know your speech's general purpose, to inform, persuade, or entertain an audience, then you can begin preparing your Specific Purpose Statement. Getting a Specific Purpose is the most important early step in developing a successful speech. The Specific Purpose Statement is to help you get an exact idea of what you want to do, the direction you want your speech to take. To help you think about the specific purpose statement ask yourself these questions. If the General Purpose is to Inform, then what are you informing the audience about? If the General Purpose is to Persuade, then what are you trying to persuade the audience to do or think? What's your focus? What area of the topic do you want to share with your audience? An effective Purpose Statement should meet certain Wording Requirements, and the resulting content needs to be enough but not too much to meet your time requirement.
