- Now, it's nice to imagine that you delegate tasks to employees and they follow through perfectly, but what if they don't? And very often that happens. People miss instructions, they don't follow through, they don't get it done on time. How do you handle that? Think of it as the difference between a lumberjack and a gardener. Now I once had a business owner, usually a very nice guy, who behaved like a lumberjack in dealing with his employees. He was making broad sweeps of his axe. He was using words like, "I blasted "that employee, they were stupid." It was very uncharacteristic for him, and so I suggested he behave like a gardener, instead. The gardener still makes corrections, but they're small snips with the scissors, they're small prunes along the way from making correction.
