- In order to increase employee performance, managers must play the role of a coach. I'll say it again, managers must be coaches. Coaching is a different style of management. Instead of telling you what to do and how to do it, a coach asks questions to guide you through and understand how to help. Think about what that means. Managers must encourage good performance, help employees develop their knowledge, skills, and abilities, support them as their careers grow, and address employees who are struggling.
