- Consultants meet people in different companies and industries through interactions with clients, suppliers, and partners. Your network has value, if you use it well. Be a connector. Introduce people to each other. You're adding value to all of those relationships. You'll tend to be the first person people come to when they need help. This includes them coming to you when they happen to need services like the ones you provide. They'll also become a great source of referrals to you because they're trying to return the favor for all the great connections you've made for them. I had one individual who was a CEO of the client organization I served. I worked with him for a while, until he left that company to go start his own technology startup. When he did, I introduced him to a technology developer, I introduced him to a sales guy, and I introduced him to another individual who was an expert in that industry.
