Communication is the key

- On every job description for a salesperson, there's a requirement to communicate regularly with your manager and coworkers. This seems like a pretty straightforward objective, and not a responsibility that would cause a lot of angst. However, timely, detailed, and regular communication from salespeople, especially field sales representatives, is often on the list of items that others think we don't do well. We either over-communicate by calling on customers too much, or sometimes we're accused of losing contact with our buyers once the sale has been made. You really need to give it some serious thought as to how you're going to manage all of the communication requirements that you have. Since you're based in the field, needless to say you just can't walk down the hallway to talk to someone in person. If the priority of our job is sales, how then do we handle communicating effectively? When do we know if we're doing it enough, too much, or how do we find the time? The first priority…
