- Once you've decided on the type of degree that's needed for your career, you'll want to choose your elective courses strategically so that you can fill in your skill and knowledge gaps. Practice-based and skill-based courses are the most direct way to build experience for your career. A practice-based course is a learning experience where course content is supplemented with employer-based projects. The lead faculty is responsible for choosing the organization they want to collaborate with and for creating parameters of work for the student. Most often, students work in pairs or groups to consult with an organization. Hours on-site or speaking with contacts at the employer site is limited and can range from five to 20 hours for the entire semester.
