- Along with a proper chair, the desk is the other most vital furniture piece in your office. The wrong desk can slow you down and wear you out, while the right desk can assist you with paper flow, support your tasks, and increase your comfort. Let's talk about some of the more popular desk choices, and what might be right for you. The traditional desk style is generally one piece, with a surface somewhere between 30 and 48 inches wide, and 19 to 30 inches deep. It might have drawers, or it could be open underneath. This type of desk is good if most of your tasks are similar in nature, and take up little space. It doesn't allow for a lot of storage or space on the desktop itself, to add extra storage use bookshelves, drawer units, and shelves nearby. The double desk is a common choice as well.
