- I love a story about the famous orchestra conductor, Herbert von Karajan. He jumped into a taxi and urged the driver to hurry. Driver says, "Very good, where to?" Von Karajan says, "It doesn't matter, "they need me everywhere." It points to a challenge for leaders when it comes to choosing development priorities. They're already over tasked and what they work on with executive coaches takes a lot of focus and practice. We want our leaders to succeed, to achieve positive change that sticks. They want it, their stakeholders want it, everyone wants it. Almost always, one or two development priorities is plenty. Success in one or two areas is much better than little to no progress in many. After you conduct stakeholder interviews and discuss the results, the leader is in a position to make a well informed decision about those top one to two areas.
