- Your company's culture, values and vision can be written on the walls. A job description can state tasks to be completed, but in the end, people will do what they think will bring them the most rewards. People do what they're incentivized to do. It's really that simple. If people think they'll get a bonus, a promotion, some kind of tangible reward or recognition for accomplishing a certain goal, in almost every case, they will do whatever they need to accomplish that goal. Without always focusing on the behaviors or skills you intended. In other words, you can tell someone that they will be more productive if they collaborate but if you calibrate their target's to their productivity, not to collaboration and they believe they can be more productive by working individually, that is what they will do.
