- You want your team members to have ideas, but you need to keep a balance between focus and exploration. When people have ideas, challenge them to explain why the idea should be prioritized. One technique for challenging them is to make them run their idea through your strategic filters. For each filter, have them explain why their idea passes or fails a particular filter. This forces them to think through the justification for their idea. It will help them make a case for that iniative. My instructors came to me one time with a new idea for a new training course. The way they designed the course they wanted to have two instructors teaching. It was a good idea. The problem was, we have a strategic filter that says all of our courses can be taught with one instructor. When you see your team members working on tasks that seem to be distractions, don't just let it go, challenge them. If that task is off focus have them stop working on it.
