Avoiding tricky issues
Managing upward often sounds straightforward. But there are a few issues and situations you wish to avoid in order to not offend the boss. Lets consider a few of these tricky possibilities. First, lets address upstaging your manager. Not a good idea. It's understandable in some ways. We recognize in the moment that we understand something or know something they dont. And instead of biting our tongue, or sharing privately, we blurt out what we know just like we did back in grade school. And as a result, we make those around us, in this case, our boss, look unprepared or somehow not bright. Let's remember that no one likes a know it all. Another great example is over-agreeing with the boss. Yes, boss that's a great idea. I couldn't agree more, boss. My thoughts exactly. Sometimes we call these folks yes men, or women.
