- If you're not familiar with statistics, then a great place to start is Naked Statistics by Charles Wheelan. Wheelan is a former public policy professor from the University of Chicago. It's a fun read and a great introduction to statistical analysis. In the book, he goes over the danger of using reports to have sloppy conclusions. If you know what to look for, then you can see sloppy conclusions everywhere. One place you'll see this is on internet news sites. Professor Wheelan imagines a news site with an attention-grabbing headline. People who take short breaks at work are far more likely to die of illness. Sounds pretty scary. Maybe businesses should keep workers locked in their office. That might be the best way to keep them safe. According to this study of 36,000 workers, those who reported taking several 10-minute breaks were 41 percent more likely to develop an illness over the next five years.
