Anticipating audience size

- Does the size of the audience really matter? Why not just a one-size fits all speech? Think about that for a minute. Can you imagine writing one speech and then delivering that same speech to an audience of six people or 106 people? The conversational group of six would not be receptive to a formal speech any more than you would be able to give an intimate conversational speech to the auditorium's audience of over 100. So, yes, size does matter because there is not a one-size fits all way to write a speech. As you write your speech, you have to think how to adapt or tailor it to your audience size. Even though there is a variety of terms for various audience sizes, for the purposes of this discussion we're going to use small, medium, and large. Small up to 20. Medium, 20 to 50 range. And Large, over 50. The smaller the audience, the more flexibility you need to write into your speech. You will have to be able to adapt quickly. Smaller groups may feel more comfortable asking…
