- There are many routes a field sales representative can take when they're ready to pursue the next step in their career. However, because of the unique nature of being a remote staff member, many sales people are perfectly happy with being independent, running their own business, and staying far away from the home office. This is something that you'll only know if you want to be considered for a promotion or not after you've spent a few years as a field sales representative. There are also two other factors that you need to be aware of. I've seen many sales people encounter some difficulties when they move into a corporate environment. The years of independence and meeting avoidance are now a lot different. Add in the inevitable office politics and much more structure, and it and becomes a real culture shock for some people.
