What is data storytelling?
- [Instructor] We've all heard the expression, a picture is worth a thousand words. Imagine having to describe an animal to someone who hasn't seen it before, versus showing the person a photograph. It's a lot easier, and it's quicker, and it's likely to be a lot more effective. Turns out the same can be said of data. Creating a graph from numbers is almost always better than showing the numbers. Want to show rainfall in Hawaii per season? Use a bar chart that shows the extent of rainfall for each month. Need to show sales figures per quarter? Same, use a bar chart. Want to explain how a government spends its finite revenue among competing priorities? Probably use a pie chart. Most of us were introduced to this in elementary school. Turns out these important concepts are even more valuable today as data plays an increasing role in our societies.
