- At some point, you may need to show content from your Android phone or tablet to a group of people. Whether you're using PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides, or maybe just showing off photos or a website, it doesn't really make sense to have people crowd around a small tablet screen. If you have access to a television or a projector, with an HDMI input, you can probably use one of those. This is a SlimPort adapter, and this is an MHL adapter. They're two competing types of adapters but they both work the same way.
What I'm gonna do is connect an HDMI cable into the adapter. Then, you want to connect this HDMI cable into a TV, or a projector, or some other display. Now this HDMI cable is already connected to this TV, and the TV is already turned on, and set to the HDMI input. Next, some of these adapters have a USB power port, a micro USB connection right here. This is simply for power. What you'll need to do, is connect a USB cable to that, and then plug that USB cable into some power source.
Maybe the charging adapter that came with your tablet. The thing about this power cable is that you may not even need to connect it. I've used SlimPort adapters without the power cable connected and it's worked fine. And at other times, it doesn't work at all. So you can always just give it a try, and see if it works without the power cable. But if you're going to leave this connected for a long time, this connection will also provide power to your Android device, which will keep the battery from dying. So now, I can just connect this to my Android tablet.
So I'll plug it into the USB port down on the bottom of my tablet, and I'm gonna give it a minute. After a moment, I should see the screen from my Android tablet up here on the television. And there it is. I can even pick up the tablet and rotate it and the image will rotate on the television as well. And from here, I can do just about anything I want to on my device, because the screen is being mirrored. So, for example, I'm going to open up a PowerPoint presentation, and I'll flip into the presentation mode, and I can go through this whole slideshow.
I can swipe through my slides, talk about them, and give my presentation. Now, when I'm done, I'm just gonna get out of this presentation, and I'll just go back to the home screen. And if I want to, I can rotate back. Now, connecting the adapter is really no big deal, but you do need to be careful to get the right adapter for your device. Some Android devices will work with SlimPort, and some other devices will work with MHL. And some don't work with a wired adapter at all. For example, many Samsung devices, like this Samsung Galaxy S5 phone, work with the MHL adapter and many Nexus devices, like this Nexus 7 tablet or the Nexus 5 phone, work with the SlimPort adapter.
But then, some Nexus devices, like the Nexus 6 or the Nexus 9, don't support either adapter. Now, to add to that, there are three different versions of MHL. MHL 1, MHL 2, and MHL 3. So, an MHL 3 adapter that you buy for one device may not work on a device that's designed to work with an MHL 1 adapter. Anyway, the point is this, you're going to have to do a little bit of research, either online or maybe just in the documentation that came with your Android device.
Or, here's a shortcut that you might try. Just go to an online store, like Amazon or some other online computer store. Search for the name of your device, along with the keyword "MHL" or "SlimPort." If I search for "Nexus 7 SlimPort", I'll get these results. And if I search for "Galaxy S5 MHL", I'll get these results. Make sure to read the product information closely. Just because Amazon gives you results from your search terms does not mean it's what you're looking for.
Make sure your device is explicitly mentioned in the product description. If it is, that should be what you're looking for. So you'll have to do a little research and a little shopping to find the right adapter, but if an adapter is available for your Android device, this is a great way to connect to a big screen to give presentations.
