I'd like to walk you through the components of a patent. First, you can easily look up any patent you would like on either the USPTO database or you can use Google's patent database at www.google.com/patents. Both will let you find any patent and also let you read through the various components of someone's patent application. The patent that we'll use was from an idea that my daughter came up with when she was a young teenager. We went to the mountains to sled in the snow. We had been talking about how she wanted to develop some sort of Facebook application. On the way back from the mountains, she was commenting that it was sad that we bought a brand new sled and we would probably only use it once. She said that she would tell her friends on Facebook that they could borrow it. Then a lightbulb went off.
