- Hi, I'm Jim Stice. - And I'm Kay Stice. We're brothers, and we're both business school professors at Brigham Young University. - We've been teaching in business schools around the world for a combined total of over 50 years. - [Kay] This course is an introduction to the field of finance. - [Jim] As you'll learn, we'll all surrounded by finance. - [Kay] Finance is deciding what things to buy and what not to buy. - [Jim] Getting the money to buy the things you've decided that you need. - [Kay] Efficiently managing the resources that you have. - [Jim] This is finance. What to buy, where to get the money to buy it, and how to manage it once you have it.
- As you can imagine, finance is important to individuals, to families, to companies, to governments, really to all organizations. - [Jim] As we learn about finance, we're going to look at the financial reports of Walmart. - [Kay] We're going to see the roller coaster cash flow pattern of Toys "R" Us. - [Jim] We'll learn the secrets of the capital asset pricing model, the CAPM. - [Kay] We'll talk about trading stocks and bonds. We'll look at the IPOs of Microsoft and of Facebook. - [Jim] We'll learn what an investment bank is. - [Kay] I'll show you the financial analysis that I did when we were trying to decide whether to buy a car when my family moved to Hong Kong.
- [Jim] And we'll end with some basic principles of personal financial planning. - So please, join us in a study of finance.
