Optimizing collision meshes
As is the case with many aspects of the CG production pipeline, simulation work will always require that an artist balance the speed at which a finished piece can be produced with its quality. In this video, we're going to take how optimized collision meshes inside a simulation can go a long way toward helping us do just that on cloth projects. In our testing at the moment, if I just go ahead and hit the play button. What we get is a very, very slow cloth simulation. Now, we could be forgiven for thinking that this is probably due to some high quality settings that have been applied inside the cloth modifier. But if I just select the cloth geometry and jump into the Physics tab, you can see that, oh, quality settings, even down in the Collision section. Are as they have been all along, using very modest values of 10, 2, and 1. The obvious question, then, would be, just what is it that is slowing our simulation down so much? Well, let's discount it being the cloth geometry itself by…
