Most instructors get excited when they learn that Blackboard has a built in test tool that will automatically administer and even grade student tests. I mean, what's not to get excited about? Well, there are some limitations that you need to keep in mind before you give a test in Blackboard or, for that matter, in any other online environment. The first is that technology cannot fix character. There is no technological fix that will prevent your students from cheating. I'm often asked, how do I prevent my students from copying my test questions. And, there is a way you can insert a script to prevent cutting and pasting, and that does exist but, you're also going to have to disable cellphones, cameras, SMS text messages, telephone calls, instant messengers, SnagIt, Camtasia, a pencil, someone standing next to them. Unless you're giving the test in a proctored lab, you just have to consider Blackboard tests to be tantamount to take-home exams. If you're not comfortable with that…
