Vertical and horizontal scaling
- [Tiago] So when it comes to scaling options in Azure, we have two big options. We have the vertical scaling and horizontal scaling. Talking about vertical scaling, we also call it scaling up and scaling down. With vertical scaling, what we do is that we just change the capacity of the instance. Let's give an example of a virtual machine. If we have a workload that needs more capacity, we are just going to move the workload to a larger virtual machine. Because we are moving the workload from one VM to another VM, this will often require a temporary unavailability of our workload. And we need to plan ahead when this kind of vertical scaling will happen. When we talk about horizontal scaling, it's slightly different. Because this is also called scaling out, but what happens is that I add and remove instances of the same size. So again, let's talk about virtual machines.
