- In this chapter we'll cover how devices are used within a modern workplace and how to manage cloud based data and implement data compliance. You'll see how policies are used to manage mobile apps and how to protect devices and data using mobile device management. Modern culture is embracing the use of mobile devices. For example, the use of mobile phones to make calls, take photographs, save notes, and manage calendars has become commonplace because nobody wants to carry two mobile phones, a personal one and a work device. People want to use their own personal device at work. Organizations have needed to respond to this expectation and devise methods of controlling how users access corporate resources such as email, from devices that are not owned and manged by corporate IT. When a business moves to the cloud, mobile devices including phones, tablets and laptops can be used to gain easy access to cloud based resources allowing users to be productive whilst on the go. By managing mobile devices, users can be enabled to securely access corporate resources in the cloud, 24 hours a day from anywhere in the world with obvious benefits for the business. Devices are managed by using a mobile device management solution or MDM. For example Microsoft Intune, MobileIron, or AirWatch. MDM allows devices to be enrolled, configured and provisioned to allow them to securely access corporate data and resources. MDM solutions can manage corporate-owned devices and employee-owned devices. Corporate-owned devises are owned and supplied to users by the organization for business use. An organization will typically lock down devices to meet security requirements. For example, only allow a specific set of tasks to be carried out such as accessing corporate email or using an authorized application. Another option is for users to use their personal device for business usage. This is known as bring your own device or BYOD. Bring your own devices are more difficult to manage as they do not belong to the organization. In order to access corporate data using BYOD, organizations need to implement mobile device management to ensure that corporate data is securely isolated from personal data. The career skills presented in this section are that you've gained an understanding of why companies allow mobile devices to be used to access corporate data and resources. Devices need to be managed by using a mobile device management solution. And corporate-owned devices are easy to manage and control and you've seen the challenges of bring your own devices being used.
