- [Narrator] If you've worked in IT for some time you may have come across Active Directory Domain Services or AD before so how does the on-premises Active Directory differ from the cloud-based Azure Active Directory? Let's find out. Both Active Directory and Azure AD provide identity management for your users and devices. Active Directory provides identity and access management for on-premises systems and applications whereas Azure AD provides cloud-based identity management and additionally allows you to deploy single sign-on services for your cloud-based resources. Let's take a look at some of the other differences. Active Directory is used on-premises and its physically installed on a server called a domain controller.
