- [Instructor] Let's talk about the first quintessential pillar of an Azure Active Directory environment, managing users. A directory service cannot exist without its users and that's why this is the best place to begin. But before we dive into the chapter, let us quickly brush up on our knowledge on the types of user accounts. If you have seen my previous courses or are familiar with the basic concepts of Azure AD, you would already know this. There are three types of user accounts that you can have in Azure AD, federated, synchronized, and cloud, or also known as cloud-only users. A federated user originates in an on-premises environment with Windows Server Active Directory Domain Services and Federation Services. This user object is synchronized into Azure through the AD Connect tool. The sign-in method used is AD FS sign-in, so the authentication happens on premises.
