What is facilities management?

- [Voiceover] We're starting at the Introduction to FM chapter now in our AutoCAD Facilities Management 103 Occupancy course, and the first video is, What is Facilities Management? Now before we start, you'll notice we're using the 00_GND_FM.dwg file. And you'll notice here, if I click here on one of the columns, that we have another drawing referencing as a reference drawing, or an xref as it's called. I'll just hit escape there to deselect it. So what is facilities management? Well facilities management is the ability to manage your facility using AutoCAD drawings in this case. We have a building in front of us, it's an old residential building that an insurance company has taken onboard as its headquarters. So it's got some weird and wonderful shaped rooms. If I zoom in on this top office area here, you can see a great big curved fireplace for example that's in one of the offices. Now that could be a reception room, it could be a boardroom, it could be any kind of room depending on what you've set it up as with your facilities management. So for example, if you'd followed the other two courses, 101 and 102, you would have realized that that particular room was set up as a particular kind of room and was managed as a particular kind of space in the space management course. So facilities management allows you to go around and basically generate polylines around each area and room and space that you use. So if I click there, there's a polyline there, and that polyline gives me what is called xdata. Now that xdata is really useful because every closed polyline in this particular FM drawing has an area, and that xdata area can be transposed out to things like AutoCAD tables, so that you can annotate all of the areas of your rooms, your spaces, and so on. So we're in the occupancy course this time, and occupancy in facilities management is all the people and which people are in which room, and what objects are in each room. So we're talking desks, chairs, photocopiers, et cetera, so that we can actually have an inventory of people and things rather than just rooms, areas, and spaces. So facilities management is the ability to manage all of that and annotate that onto a drawing. In this case, using AutoCAD.
