- [Instructor] With setting up our working folder and our data shortcut project directories, we talked a little bit about directory structure and some best practices there. What about file structure best practices? How does the use of our DREFs affect how we structure our files? Well, as you see here, we're talking about dividing our information in a way that helps us conquer it effectively. So step one, separate your design data from your linework. Whenever you see that phrase, design data, I'm referring to Civil 3D objects. Put the Civil 3D objects and your design of those Civil 3D objects in a separate file from your linework, and whenever I mention linework, it's mainly your AutoCAD basic geometry, hatch patterns, lines, polylines, that really are going to be something you may XREF visually, but is not design data.
