Join Scott Onstott for an in-depth discussion in this video Constructing the first wraparound roof, part of AutoCAD: 3D Architectural Modeling (2014).
- Let's turn our attention to drawing this roof,…which wraps around this side of the building…and continues over here as shown in the elevations.…The key to drawing this roof properly…is to get the ridge line in place, in three dimentions.…Let's draw a line from this point,…which is at the top of the ridge,…and snap it perpendicular to the tower wall.…Then draw another line from this point over.…You might be tempted to snap it onto the end of the wall,…but that's not going to be correct.…
You see, this eve is projecting out…from the wall a short distance.…This line is actually at some angle in the x-y plane.…What we need is a line that starts here…and goes over here, but ends in the plane of the wall.…We can't snap to anything to make that happen,…so we have to type that in using coordinates.…In this case, I'll use a point filter.…I'll type, .yz, enter.…
Then I'll pick the original point.…The command line says "need x".…It's going to prompt you for the missing coordinate.…I'll click the x-coordinate here.…Enter to end a line command.…
