- [Instructor] Another way of sharing information or having multiple users work together collaboratively is to use external references, or X refs. External references are similar to inserting blocks, but have the added benefit of live updating. So if the file being referenced changes the user can see the updates in the drawing that they're working on. One example would be a mechanical assembly. In that assembly file, I may have three or four separate components that each have their own drawing. I can reference those components from their individual files into my file, as the other users are continuing to work on the components themselves. As they save their changes, I'll receive a notification every time they press Save. This way, I can reload the individual components and see how the changes affect the rest of the assembly.
