- [Instructor] Another way of sharing information or having multiple users work together collaboratively is by using external references or xrefs. External references are similar to inserting blocks but have the added benefit of live updating. So if the file being referenced changes, the user can see the updates in the drawing that they're working on. For example, if I'm working on a mechanical assembly, I might have three or four components that each have their own individual drawing. I can reference all of these components into a master assembly from their original files. As the other users work on the individual components themselves, I'll receive a notification every time they save the component drawing. This way, I can reload the individual components and see how it affects the rest of the assembly. Referencing the files also allows the assembly drawing itself to remain smaller.
