- AutoCAD uses what is known as the Cartesian plane…for its geometric drafting environment.…Thinking back to grade school geometry,…you may remember the x and y axes…of the Cartesian system.…Essentially, coordinates for points…are always given in an x,y format.…X is always the horizontal axis…and y is always the vertical axis.…Each axis is marked or divided numerically…like a number line.…Where the two axes meet, or cross,…is called the origin point,…or 0,0.…
The axis to the right of the origin is positive,…as is the axis above the origin point.…Below and to the left…are negative values.…Again, the coordinates are always given…in an x,y format.…Let's locate the points we see on the screen.…This point here is located at 1,1,…one unit to the right…and one unit up.…To locate this point here,…from the origin point,…we move over one, two, three units…and then up…one, two.…
That makes this coordinate…3,2.…To locate this point down here,…we're gonna move in the negative direction,…x first.…One, two, three units,…and then down,…one, two, negative three units here.…
