Adding the cable tray

- [Instructor] Like anything else in AutoCAD MEP, cable tray is an automatic function. We can simply select the type and let AutoCAD MEP add all of our risers, drops, bends and intersections for us. What I wanna do here is select a communications cable tray type from the tool palette. We'll then draw the cable tray from the electrical room, up and over the wall, down the hallway, and bend it around the corner. Then we're gonna create an intersection and see what AutoCAD puts in as a default. To get started let's jump into our cable tray drawing, making sure that our workspace is set for electrical. Let's go to the cable tray and conduit tab. Let's go ahead and select data. For the elevation let's keep it at one foot. Notice we can change the width and the heighth however we want. I'm gonna click into my drawing area, I'm gonna come into my electrical room. I'm gonna pick a point right about here. Now my elevation is gonna be 13 feet. This layout requires custom sized parts. Yeah let's accept the layout. This time I'm coming out into the middle of my hallway. Notice that it reflects the same size that we had. I'm gonna go up the hallway, over the top of my conduit. I'm gonna pick a spot right about here. Now I'm gonna hit escape. Now what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna T into this and see what kind of intersection AutoCAD gives us. Select your cable tray. Right-click and let's add selected. Shift + right-click and let's go nearest. I'm gonna pick a spot right about here. I'm gonna draw my cable tray out and over. I'm gonna pick a spot here. I'm gonna come straight up. Now I'm gonna hit escape. Again notice all of our bends are correct, and it puts in our T intersection for us. It arrays all of our lines down, we don't have to do any of that work. It even puts it on the right layer for us. Select this bend right here. Hold down your shift key and your wheel button. Let's go to a 3D view. Let's hit escape and here we have it. Right over the top of our conduit, we're comin' down the hallway. Let's go back to our top view. We can zoom in and see how well we can draw a cable tray. Again sometimes the best results of 3D are efficiency and great-looking plans.
