- [Instructor] Another tool that we have for shaping the terrain in Civil 3D is the grading object. Let's see how grading objects work. For this example, I'd like to build upon here in this corner, and we're starting with a feature line that is at elevation, I believe, 2170. To get started, we'll launch the Grading Creation Tools. I'll go up here to the Grading dropdown on the Home ribbon and pick Grading Creation Tools. That brings up this toolbar. The first command over here on the far left is to create a grading group, so I'll click that and I'll type in the name of migrating group, which we'll simply call Pond. Notice that there's an automatic surface creation option. I'm going to leave that off for now, but we will turn it on later. I'll click Okay. The next thing we want to do is assign a target surface.
