Using the exercise files - Audition Tutorial

- [Narrator] If you have access to the exercise files for this course, you'll need both Adobe Audition and Premier Pro 2018 or later to open them. You can check which version of the software you have installed by checking the year at the end of its name. The exercise files will download as a single compressed zip file and after unzipping the file, you'll see that you have a folder called exercise files. If you open this folder, you'll see that we have a folder for each chapter in the course and inside of each folder are the exercise files for each video. At the bottom, we have this folder called media where all the assets for the exercise files are stored. It's important that you don't move these around or rename them or it may make it difficult for the exercise files to locate them. To show you what I mean, I'll load up Audition. I should just mention this training applies to both Mac and PC, although I'm working on a Mac, these files will work on either platform, and to open up the first Audition file, I'll just go up to the file menu and choose open. I'll navigate to my exercise files folder and the first Audition file is in this O two Audition folder, I'll double click that and select the Audition file.sesx, that's Auditions multi track session file format and then I'll click open. Now, as you can see, all my files have relinked without any issues and this should be the case for most of you, but if you do get prompted to relink your media, you'll probably a window that looks something like this. Now, at the top of this window, we have the name of the file that it's looking for and the name of the clip in the multi track session, so the only thing we need to focus on is this first name here. So, to relink this file, I'm just going to navigate to my exercise files, I'll go into my media folder, and because I'm working in Audition at the moment, I'll go to the Audition folder and in here I should be able to find that file. So I'll just scroll down until I can see it, there it is, Liberty Remix Extracted, that's the name of the file there, and then I'll click open. If I have any other files that were offline as well, it should automatically find them and relink them as well. But as I said, if you haven't moved these folders around or renamed anything, they should relink automatically when you open your session. If you open a file, you might notice that Audition generates a smaller file with the same name and in the same folder, but the extension is .pkf. These are peak files and they help Audition speed up during waveforms when they open a file. Personally, I don't find that they make a big difference to my load times and they tend to clutter up my folders, so I like to turn them off and you can do this as well by going to your preferences. So on a Mac that's in Adobe Audition cc, preferences. If you're on Windows, then that's edit preferences. You want to go down to the media and disc cache options, and at the very bottom here, you'll see a checkbox for save peak files. So if you leave this unchecked, then it won't create those .pkf files. Of course, if you find Audition is taking a long time to open your files, it's probably worth keeping this checked. Occasionally, you'll also be working with Adobe's video editing software Premier Pro and you may be prompted to relink this media as well. So, I'm going to open up Premier Pro and when you get to the welcome screen, you can open up your project just by clicking the open project button and again, I'll navigate to my exercise files. The first Premier project is O one premier folder, so I'll open that and select the premier project .prproj and click open, and again all of my media has relinked automatically without any issue, but to show you what it would look like if it hasn't, I'm just going to go down to my video bin down here and I'll just make these files offline, click okay, and I'll choose video and I'm going to link media and this is the window that you should be presented with if your media is actually offline. So then you can just select any one of these files and then choose locate and over here on the left, I'm just going to navigate to my exercise files folder, go down to the media folder. Now we're working in Premier not Audition, so I'll go into the premier folder and there are all the files that we're looking for, although we do have these handy search button down here that will automatically locate the file for me, so I'll just click that and it automatically highlights the file that I'm looking for. With that highlighted, I can then just click okay and it will automatically relink that file and bring everything else online as well. So that's how we get started with the exercise files in this course. If you don't have access to these files, I recommend following along with your own assets.
