- [Voiceover] So, we now have our lav mikes placed, and our boom mike is in position. And we've got our closed-back headphones on. Now, where do we hit level-wise on our recorder? And how do we best monitor that level to ensure we're hearing things properly? Let's discuss best practices for where we set our record levels and what volume to listen at during the shoot. First, let's talk about record levels. The key word here is headroom. In earlier days, when we used analog tape recorders, we had to worry about the noise floor of tape getting in the way of our signal, and we had to optimize our record level to be as loud as possible over that noise. Now, with digital recorders, we have much more dynamic space to work with from the quietest sound to the loudest sound we can record at. And there's very little self noise in our system to worry about. The key is always to get a healthy signal, but now we have the flexibility to leave a lot more space above the average signal.
