Measuring with the Loudness Radar

- [Instructor] For a long time, loudness was measured using peak amplitude. So for example, if I told you I had a file with a peak amplitude that was minus six decibels, that doesn't really tell you much about the actual loudness at all. It could only be minus six for a split second or it could regularly hitting that level throughout. So, simply measuring peak amplitude isn't very specific and allows for a lot of different loudness across files. This is why in recent years, a measurement for what is known as perceived loudness has been established. And this is a more accurate representation of loudness in any given program. If you are delivering for broadcast, this is something you'll most likely need to know because broadcast has very strict loudness standards. But even if you're just delivering for the web, this is a good way to make sure your mix is consistent at an appropriate level. So I have my session here and I want to measure its overall loudness.
