How to use exercise files

- [Instructor] If you have access to the exercise files for this course, you'll need Adobe Audition 2019 to open them. The exercise files will download as a single compressed file and after unzipping the file you'll see a folder called exercise files. I'll just double click this to open it, and at the top here we have a folder called 01_Audition and this is where all the exercise files are kept and divided into chapters. Underneath that we have 02_Premiere and this is where you can find a Premiere project that we'll be using throughout the course, and at the very bottom we have a media folder where all the assets for the exercise files are stored. It's important that you don't move these around or rename them or it may make it difficult for Audition to locate them. To show you what I mean I'm going to open up Audition. While this is loading I should mention this training applies to both Mac and PC. Although I'm working on a Mac, these files will work on either platform. As you open up the first exercise file, I'm just going to go up to my top menu up here, File, and then choose Open, and I'll navigate to my exercise files. I'll go to 01_Audition, chapter one, and I'm going to select the first file in the folder which is interface.sesx. Sesx is Audition's multitrack session file format, and then I'll click Open. Now as you can see my files have all relinked without any issues, and this should be the case for most of you. If you do get prompted to relink your media, it will probably be a screen that looks something like this. You'll notice at the top here it's telling me the name of the file it can't find and the name of the clip in the multitrack session. We can ignore the name of the clip, it's just the name of the file that we're looking for and sometimes these can be two different things. To relink this I'll just navigate to my media folder and I'll locate the file that it's looking for. This looks like it here, and then I'll click Open. And once it finds one file, it should be able to automatically relink the rest of them. But if you haven't moved these folders around or renamed anything they should relink automatically anyway when you open the session. If you open a file in Audition, you might notice that it generates a smaller file with the same name and in the same folder, but the extension is .PKF, these are peak files and they help Audition speed up drawing waveforms when you open a file. Personally, I don't find they make a big difference to my load times and they tend to clutter up my folders, so I like to turn them off, and you can do this by going to your preferences, because I'm in a Mac that means I'm going to go up to Adobe Audition CC, and choose Preferences. If you're on Windows that's Edit Preferences, and then I'm going to select Media and Disk Cache. And to turn off peak file generation, you just want to make sure you uncheck Save Peak Files. Of course if you find Audition is taking a long time to open your files, it's probably worth keeping this checked. Occasionally we'll also be working with Adobe's video editing software Premiere Pro, and you may be prompted to relink this media as well. To show you how to do this, I'm going to load Premiere Pro 2019, and then once you get to a welcome screen, you can open up a project by going up to the File menu, choosing Open Project, I'll go to the 02_Premiere folder, and I'll select the only project that's in there which is this ProjectRello and I'll click Open. And again, all of my media has relinked automatically, but to show you what it would look like if it hadn't, I'm just going to go over to my 03_Assets bin, and I'll choose File, Make Offline, and then I'll prompt it to relink by choosing File, Link Media, and this is the dialog box you would see if your media was offline. At the moment it's looking for this file here, and all you have to do is go down and choose locate at the bottom right of the window. On the left side over here you want to navigate to your exercise files, and then your media folder, and then rather than having to scroll down and look for the specific file, all you have to do is click this Search button, and Premiere will find it for us. And you can see it's highlighted that file here. So now all I have to do is click OK and Premiere will relink everything else in that folder. So that's how we get started with the exercise files in this course. If you don't have access to these files, I recommend following along with your own assets.
