- [Voiceover] So what do we need, gear-wise, to accomplish good audio? Let's go over what gear is important both during the shoot, and in the post-production phase of your project. For production, there are two kinds of microphones that are essential to getting good recording. You'll first want a directional microphone. We sometimes call this the boom mic, since it should be mounted on a boom pole with some sort of wind resistant blimp, if you're shooting outside. The industry standard boom mic is the Sennheiser 416. If you're buying a boom mic that you expect to give you quality recordings, I suggest buying a Sennheiser 416. And if the 416 is out of your budget, you can rent one, as all good rental houses have this mic. There are alternatives to the 416, but like all gear, unfortunately, it's good to keep in mind that quality does scale down with price.
