- [Voiceover] The boom mic should be thought of as your primary mic source for any shoot. It will consistently be the most natural source and if the proper technique is used it'll sound the best. Let's look at a few simple rules of the thumb to get the best result with your boom mic. Rule number one use a proper shock mount and a boom. These mics are sensitive. A professional shock mount system and noiseless boom pole will protect the mic from any handling noise. In addition if you're shooting outside you have to use a windscreen or a blimp. Even in low wind situations the boom mic is susceptible to air hitting the mic capsule. Next follow the signal to noise rule get the mic as close as possible. Sound recorders and camera operators always have a contemptuous relationship. Because as a sound recordist you're always trying to get the boom mic as close to the actor as possible just outside the frame for obvious reasons you don't want the boom mic in the shot but you should be just…
