Walking and talking

- Sometimes, your subject, or actor won't be standing still or sitting in a cafe and having a cup of coffee like I am right now. It's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it. They might be walking and talking for example. The script might call for that or maybe you just want a more interesting shot in your show. The camera can follow their movement, or in some cases we'll actually be moving with them. But in any case, the microphone always has to move with the talent in order to be in position to sound good. You can't have the talent move away from, or toward the microphone for that matter, and still have it sound consistently good. If you've ever used the camera mic or any mic attached to the camera, then you know what I mean. Here, check this out: (Background noise) Now we're on the camera mic. Notice that the camera operator, Audrey, can zoom in on the picture and make me appear closer, but the sound does not zoom in with the picture. So the solution is to keep a microphone close…
