- With analog systems it was clear to producers and clients that there were several steps in place and you normally couldn't skip them. For example, you couldn't watch dailies before getting the film to the lab. An expectation, somewhat unrealistic, with digital technologies is that everything can be done faster and cheaper. While this can be done in many cases, it is somewhat unreasonable to expect a rough cut with preliminary grades and sound effects 45 minutes after shooting something. Here's the first tip of many. Always think about the edit even at the pre-production and production stages. Let me explain. If you're working on a fast-paced piece, you will need a lot more coverage and this will result in a more time-consuming edit. Think, for example, the Jason Bourne series versus a straight 10 minute interview. Is this piece going to require extensive color grading? Will you be adding a lot of motion graphics to the project?
