Search engine optimization is the process of designing or fine tuning your site, so that it appears friendly to Google, and the other search engines. There are a number of techniques for this, but let's begin with one of the most basic,. The site description, which is key in determining your search ranking. The description is invisible text that tells the search engines what your site is all about. When you do a search, this is the text that comes up describing your page. Let's start with, looking at a fairly famous site. We'll look at Gibson, for all of the guitar players watching this.
Let's just do a Google search, for Gibson. And, you can see what comes up is gibson.com. All of this here is the description. Official Gibson site, buy acoustic guitars, Epiphone, or Les Paul. Electric guitars, bass guitar packages, and banjos. Also, these right here are actual links on the pages within sites. So if we just click on here in Gibson guitar, take notice that nowhere in this site do you see the description. This is something that's invisible on your site.
And it's only visible to the search engines. So once again, we go back and look, and we can see official Gibson site, buy acoustic guitars. But you don't see any of that over here. We'll do another one. We'll do my own site. We'll do Bobby Owsinski. Bobby Owsinski, so again this is Bobby Owsinski, author of 18 books and recording music production, music business, and social media. And again, we can see book excerpts, music 3.0 Best selling music books. Musician video handbooks. If we click on this, once again no where do we see that text.
That's because it's invisible on this site, but it's visible to search engines. Both Google and Bing will fill the description in for you if you don't create one. But then you're at their mercy is to what they pick off the page. For that reason you're better off creating one yourself. The advantage of the description is that search engines use it to help with the search rankings. By making sure that your name is included, it makes your search ranking stronger. One caution when creating a description though, it must be at 155 characters, but it's best to stay under 66 to be sure it's all displayed. Also be sure not to use any quote marks since that will stop the description from appearing from the point where they appear, onward.
