- All right, so now let's cover picking technique. There are many different styles of playing the guitar and you will definitely see players play with all kinds of thin picks, thick picks, even some players use a penny to pick the guitar. I would strongly recommend that you guys use thick to medium picks in the beginning for picking where the pick returns to flat a little bit quicker. Also, mostly hold the pick with your index and middle finger. You'll see players fan their fingers out or hold it into a fist or use different methods, but here's how I would suggest that you pick. We're gonna start out and put the index finger almost in a trigger-like formation and then put the pick with the fatter end against the index finger and then clamp down with the thumb to be up against the entire flat backside of the pick so that the tip, the teardrop formation is what you pick with.
