The filter section

- [Instructor] Now that we've set up our oscillator section to create the basic tone we want to start with, now we can use the filter section to alter that tone. Filters work by removing harmonics or overtones or components to the final sound. A low pass filter says let low harmonics through unobstructed and just filter out the upper ones. A high pass filter says let the higher harmonics through unobstructed and filter out just the lower ones. Now, initially, I set the cutoff up all the way and the voltage control filter modulation amount all the way as well. In low pass mode, that means that all the harmonics are below the cutoff and therefore get passed unobstructed. I'm going to turn the VCF modulation amount down to zero initially just to make sure the cutoff's not getting boosted by our envelope in this case. I'm going to hold a note and slowly reduce the cutoff frequency. And hear those higher harmonics disappear until we have virtually no sound left. That's because all the…
