In this lesson, Bryan expands on a fundamental version of the classic song Whiskey Before Breakfast. He embellishes the tune with picking a stream of eighth notes, and more hammer-ons and pull-offs to create a smoother and fuller sound and avoid sounding one dimensional.
- That sort of leads us into the B section, here.…(picks guitar)…And one of the challenging things about that opening phrase…through the second ending,…is that we have two upstrokes in a row.…Adhering to our pick pattern,…look at three-and, where our hammer-on starts.…Three and four and.…Alright, the hammer-on takes care…of that downbeat of beat four,…and also that spells out that,…that C chord form right there, so...…
(picks guitar)…So it's a nice, connected-sounding phrase…because you've got notes ringing against each other,…there's a certain energy lift into that high note…that is the downbeat of the B section.…But, you know, not to take too much…of a breath too soon, here,…we got a good churn of eighth notes coming up here.…(picks guitar)…A good challenge, here, we always want to challenge…that sense of flow through trying to understand…smooth transitions.…Here we have, at the, what is that, bar 12,…we have a transition of,…(picks guitar)…going from a high string down to a low string,…all the way back up.…
Almost a bit of crosspicking right there.…
