- Alright, so we've already covered pitch information and how that looks on the staff. Now, let's cover time information. Meaning that there are different note values and rests that show you how you're playing things in time, holding notes longer or resting more. Get the beat. The beat is the steady, even pulse that remains constant throughout a passage of music. It is what the listener's foot taps along to. The measure. Musicians count beats and divide them into small groups. As you know, a group of beats is called a measure. Measures can consist of any number of beats. One very common measure is a group of four. Measures are marked on the staff using bar lines. For this reason, measures are sometimes called bars. A double bar indicates the end of a passage of music or short example. Signs of the times.
