- [Instructor] When you begin thinking about putting a demo together, it is really useful to decide in advance what your primary instrument for the demo is going to be. A primary instrument is almost always going to be a piano or an acoustic guitar. A simple professionally recorded single instrument, either piano or acoustic guitar, and vocal will go a long way towards representing your song's melody and lyric, which is the essence of the song. The genre and the tempo generally help determine the primary instrument. For example, ballads are pretty evenly split between piano and guitar, but then depending on the genre, piano might feel inappropriate for an uptempo country demo and acoustic guitar might feel out of place for an uptempo pop demo. So it really does depend on the genre of music as to which instrument will ultimately become your primary instrument that you're going to build your demo around.
