Skills needed to be a songwriter
- [Instructor] If you've either just started or want to start writing songs, it's going to be really useful to know what skills you'll need to learn and develop. In my experience, the first essential skill is what I'll refer to as the spark. You can think of this as the inspiration or urge to create, and it's centered around realizing that you have something to express in a song. This can be artistic, emotional, political, or anything else you're moved to write about. The next set of skills are musical and or lyrical ability. What I mean by musical ability is anything from playing an instrument to singing to just generally understanding what makes music work, like having a good sense of rhythm. By lyrical ability, I mean you've got a gift for painting mental pictures with words and can articulate what you're feeling through your writing. Another quality of lyrical ability, by the way, is understanding which words sound good being sung, as that is the major difference between lyrics…
