Should you play or sing on your demos?
- [Instructor] An issue that songwriters struggle with often is whether or not they should be playing and/or singing on their own demos. I have a series of questions that you should consider asking yourself as to whether or not you're the right person for that job. The very first question you'll want to ask yourself is are you an experienced studio vocalist or studio instrumentalist? In other words, not only an experienced singer but a singer who's experienced singing in a studio or a player who is experienced playing in the studio. This is a very different set of skills than playing live or singing live. It's what I like to refer to as music surgery. As opposed to getting up on stage and feeding off the energy of the crowd, you're going into a small box, putting on headphones, listening to a clicking sound, and still giving that emotionally attached dynamic performance as a singer or an instrumentalist.
