You need to have a very specific set of skills to play and sing on your own songwriter demos. If you don't have these skills, leave the task up to the pros—says studio veteran and songwriter, Cliff Goldmacher, in this songwriting tutorial.
- [Instructor] An issue that songwriters struggle with often…is whether or not they should be playing…and/or singing on their own demos.…I have a series of questions…that you should consider asking yourself…as to whether or not you're the right person for that job.…The very first question you'll want to ask yourself is…are you an experienced studio vocalist…or studio instrumentalist?…In other words, not only an experienced singer…but a singer who's experienced singing in a studio…or a player who is experienced playing in the studio.…
This is a very different set of skills…than playing live or singing live.…It's what I like to refer to as music surgery.…As opposed to getting up on stage…and feeding off the energy of the crowd,…you're going into a small box,…putting on headphones, listening to a clicking sound,…and still giving that emotionally attached…dynamic performance as a singer or an instrumentalist.…If you are capable of that,…the next question to ask yourself is…do I sing or play in the appropriate style…
