Shelton roll 1: "Boil Them Cabbage Down"
(rolling banjo music) - That's a tune called the "Danny Thomas," which I wrote a few years ago for my electric band that I had back then. And a lot of what I'm playing there is based on something I call the Shelton roll, because Allen Shelton, who I've mentioned before, is a great banjo player who used to play with Jim and Jesse. As far as I know, he was the first person to use this roll. (picks notes) And he would do this sort of thing where he'd hit the first string. (picks note) And then do a forward roll. (picks three notes) We could start with the... (picks notes) Middle finger, then a forward roll, thumb, index, middle, and then repeat it. (picks notes) Over and over again. That's the whole thing, it's four notes. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four.
